I was so excited to share with you my thoughts on the predictable self and prophetic imagination that I scheduled it on Labor Day Weekend. Not very wise when most of you are Americans.

Throughout the evolution of consciousness, human beings have been searching for predictability. It is the need to be safe, certain, and comfortable. But they have also been imagining filling consciousness with new depths, heights, and widths of truth, beauty, goodness, freedom, and love.

In the modern Tarot, the first card of the Major Arcana is The Fool. Its number is 0. There is no predictability, only endless possibilities.

The Fool. She stands at the edge of a cliff, a small dog at his feet, a white rose in her hand, a tiny bundle of possessions over her shoulder. She is poised, ready to step into the great unknown with a heart full of trust.

When the Fool first appeared in the modern Major Arcana, she was lifted to spiritual heights. No longer a madwoman, she was the noble beginning supported by a direct relatonship to the gods. The Fool’s leap isn’t an act of foolishness; it's an act of profound grace. Grace is the spiritual freedom from the predictable.

Most of our lives are lived by the rules of predictability. We seek stability, we rely on established patterns, and we build a sense of self and reality based on what we can anticipate. It is the safe, priestly path. But, just like The Fool's journey, the most profound spiritual experiences are never based on the predictable.

They are based on the courage to let go and step into the mystery of imagination.
